Canadian Chess Challenge, 2010

I'm not sure how relevant this to everyone, but I do think this is a very important part of chess in Saskatchewan, which is creating new talented players ( e.g. this was how Keith and Kevin are found)

At Nationals this year, we finished with 34.0 points, which gave us 9th place. We were only 1 point away from beating Nova Scotia. Our best finish this year was Josh Timm, a talented player who got 3rd place in his grade!

Notable games includes Nigel Reynoldson vs Joey Qin, a 2300 rated player, and Nigel defeating Joey Qin. Another is Will van der Kamp defeating Jasmine Du, who is about 2000.

Next year will mark two important things for Nationals: it being the last year of Keith, Saskatchewan's star player because Kevin is leaving. The other important event is the beginning of Alexander Sasata, Robert's son. He's sure to be an excellent player with practice! Thus, I think we should start holding more tournaments for a surprise finish at Nationals next year.

Savoury Stories :)

Well, of course there was the PEI thing with Nigel and I :) we totally trashed talked them when they trash talked us so things got ugly on the chessboard. Other than that, we were professional.

Monday nights are going to be all the rage! At our first scholastic chess tournament, I'll be promoting it!

Isn't the Saskatchewan Open in June? Or has that been cancelled? If it hasn't, I think we should advertise to Alberta.

361 sleeps :) I'll be practicing for it!

Congrats to Team Sask

To everyone who represented our province so well in Montreal, congratulations on a job well done. From Don's report and pictures, it was apparent that you conducted yourselves well both at and away from the chessboard. Of course, if there are any savoury stories that would indicate otherwise, we would all like to hear them! :-)

On a related note, I would like to shamelessly plug the return of Monday Night Chess at Brunskill School starting in September. There hasn't been much decided on what the exact format will be, but in retrospect the best Monday nights were the ones towards the tail end of this spring when the Scholastic crowd started to show up, so expect that we will be trying to attract future Team Saskatchewan members this fall.

And if you can't wait that long, The Battle at the Border will be taking place in Lloydminster during the Labour Day long weekend, and it promises to be a spectacular event for players of all strengths. There is also the possibility that another tournament may happen in Saskatoon some time this summer.

How many sleeps until Victoria 2011?
