BATB Fundraiser - March 6Updated Again! I posted the wrong opening moves in my original thread. I hope this doesn't affect anyone's preparation, although I doubt that people have started preparing already...I apologize for the confusion. On a side note, when you are preparing for this tournament I encourage you to put your analysis in a Chessbase database (or .pgn file). After the tournament is over people can send me their analysis and I will add it to what I have, and then I can distribute the complete file to everyone. If people also submit some of their games from this event I can include those as well. This way we'll all have a high quality opening survey after the tournament is over, and we might even be able to contribute to current theory in this line. Updated: The date for the themed tournament has been changed to March 20. Also, I will be holding a lecture on Friday, March 19 at 8 PM. The lecture will discuss central pawn majorities in the middlegame and will illustrate common attacking and defensive techniques in these structures. The cost for the lecture is $20 and all proceeds will go to the BATB. The next BATB fundraiser will be an active "theme" tournament on March 20, and it will take place in Arts 213. A theme tournament is one where everyone plays the same opening variation, and the theme of this tournament will be the main line Sicilian Dragon! More specifically, everyone's game will begin with this sequence of moves: 1. e4 c5 This variation was chosen for several reasons: it is sharp, it features castling on opposite sides, it's a main line with tons of theory and games to study from, and it's a line that I don't play with either color so I can't be accused of stacking the deck! As well, according to Keith (who knows more about the Dragon than I do), 12.Kb1 is the latest attempt at the highest level for white to gain an advantage, so the whole system is currently quite topical. Keith and I have already committed to playing, and if you'd like to participate please let me know by responding to this thread or sending me an email. The cost to play is $20, and all proceeds will go towards Battle at the Border expenses. The number of rounds and tournament format will depend on the number of players that enter, as will the time control. This tournament will not be rated by the CFC. If you're interested in playing in this year's Battle with the likes of Nakamura, Charbonneau, Teplitsky, Yoos, Sasata, etc, please attend these fundraising events. We are over half way to our goal of raising $1,000 but we need your help to get to the finish. Registered Players

I feel stupid...
Nevermind, I saw, it's in Arts 213.
Need 1 More
We really need one more player for the active this weekend to give us an even number of entrants. Anyone?
That person might end up
That person might end up being me. This is a Benko Gambit theme tournament, right?
Great! But...I thought you
Great! But...I thought you were going to be out of town?
I will be, but due to a
I will be, but due to a scheduling change, won't be leaving until Sunday morning.
...
You're working under the assumption that everyone who is signed up will actually come as if chess players are really really dedicated to showing up if they have said they will. =)
I think so...
I think lecture only.
Join the Yugoslav Active Tournament
Come on people. This is your chance to beat a master with superb opening preparation... Sign up today!
Agreed.
I'm encouraged by the response for both the lecture and the active thus far, but it would be really great if a few more people signed up.
Jason Xiao
Hey Jason,
Are you able to attend the lecture and/or the active tournament?
Registered Players
I've updated the original thread with a list of registered players. If anyone else would like to be added to this list, please let me know.
New Proposed Date
Does Saturday, March 20 work for everyone for this themed tournament idea? By that time I'll also have finished preparing for my lecture on central pawn majorities...would Friday, March 19 work for that? Your feedback is appreciated. Thanks.
Works for me
Mar 19 lecture and Mar 20 blitz works well for me. Looking forward to both!
the new date!!!
Exclam! My job will be done out of town for sure by then and thus I will be at anything you organize. A lecture on central pawn breaks would be awesome and so would this themed tournament.
As an addendum, it's entirely possible that I won't be going back to Chaplin this next week but that's tentative as it is. So right now, the date you have set up for the tournament is still a possibility for me... but March 19/20 is much clearer for me.
March 20
I tried to post the previous comment six times, and each time it took me to a Drupal editing page. There was no indication that I had actually posted my comment. What the heck is going on?
Again, could I get feedback on April 10/11 as a possible date for the Sask Open.
Ghost in the machine - EXORCISED!
Ghost in the machine perhaps? I performed a site upgrade a couple of days ago, and there were some DNS shenanigans involved, but I don't know how that would have caused you problems. I'll keep an eye out for any other problems.
Hmmm. I hit the Post comment button to post this comment, and get the same thing. What is happening is you are getting redirected to a new test site that I am working on. This should not be happening, obviously, but it appears that the comment does get posted - you just have to return to the site to see it.
Stay tuned while I get that crowbar out and fix things.
UPDATE: Got it. Just three letter in one little file. Yack.
I doubt that I'll be able to
I doubt that I'll be able to make it for April 10/11, but thanks for signing up for the BATB fundraiser. I will set aside 6 boards for your very ambitious simul :)
Damn!
That $150 is really gonna set me back. :) As for the Sask Open, I'd really like to choose a good time for you -- I'm counting on you as a prime inducement for other experts. With you I might get Keith and Roy; with Keith and Roy I might get some of the other Alta contingent; with the Alta contingent...who knows? Maybe even Rob will be induced to show up. Do you have a free weekend in May or June?
I'll get back to you on that.
I'll get back to you on that.
March 20
Works for me. I'm in.
Incidentally, could I get some feedback on April 10/11 as a possible Sask Open date?
Says Danner...
who hasn't been there in the past little while! Roger, David and I are there regularly, and Will and Tyler plus Jan and Aaron showed up once for the tournament.
Eh, make it March 6th...
so I get some practice before regionals.
Detention!
Roger's getting called by the teacher! he's dead
Roooogerrrrrrr....
....come out, come out, wherever you are!
March 6 would sort of work
March 6 would sort of work out for me, except I need to be somewhere else from about 3:00 to 5:00 pm.
Lack Of Interest?
There seems to be a lack of interest for this event as only 3 people have signed up. I realize that for some the proposed weekend is not ideal, so that may explain the lacklustre response, or it could be that a theme tournament doesn't interest many people.
No problem - if we don't get at least 6 people signed up by Feb 28 I will cancel the event and hold another fundraiser at a later date.
Out of curiosity, would people be more interested in attending a lecture? I am currently preparing one on central pawn majorities (as requested at my last lecture). Let me know. Thanks.
no lack of interest
Of course I am very interested in the themed tournament, especially in my favorite opening system (albeit not my pet dragon variation) however yes it is the date which is uncomfortable for me. If you were to do a lecture on central pawn majorities I would all over that too, granted it fell on an agreeable date. So I am happy with either of your ideas but I hope you don't give up on the themed tournament idea because of lack of interest. I think it just happens to fall on a date that doesn't work for a lot of us. Another point to consider is how the chess club seems to have gone back to an embryonic state since the move to Brunskill school... Im sure once everybody is back in the swing of regular monday attendance and word of mouth opportunities abound the tournaments and club activities in general will pick up and get rolling (fingers crossed). I will be there tomorrow night and see what is going on and try to get a feel for what the club is wanting from you.
Thanks.
Thanks for the feedback.
...
to say that you have stuff to do a bit less than a month before the tournament is meaningless. =)
unfortunately, March 6th is one of the weekends that I am working in Chaplin. It will be my last shift there but it will force me to miss this active. If it were a weekend later, I'd be all over it.
I really like the idea of a themed active... im bummed that i can't play.
Chinese School
keeps me occupied! Sorry!I can't miss it two weeks in a row (March 13th is Regional Qualifiers for Scholastic)
Sounds very interesting
I'm in.
It's difficult
I'm interested, but at the same time, I have stuff to do. I'll get back to you later.
